-NUCLEAR MEDICINE-

GENERAL INFORMATION

Nuclear medicine is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the help of radioactive elements, chemical molecules labeled with radioactive elements (radiopharmaceuticals) or biological materials. The functions and dysfunctions of the organs and systems to be examined in nuclear medicine are examined, the diseases are diagnosed and the treatment is followed up. Some diseases are treated with radioactive substances.

ARE RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES USED IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE HARMFUL?

Radioactive materials to be used do not have side effects such as allergies. However, if stress will be provided with medication instead of a treadmill before myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, non-serious side effects such as palpitations, headaches, and dizziness may occur, just like when we exercise. The administered drug may cause shortness of breath in asthma and COPD patients. Inform our doctor before the examination. Since the amount of radioactive substances given is very small and they are quickly removed from the body, there is no serious harm to you and those around you. However, since the given activity stays in the body for about 24 hours, we ask you to stay away from children and pregnant women, and to stay at least 2 meters away from adults. All of the devices used in nuclear medicine do not emit radiation as they function like cameras that photograph gamma rays.

USAGE AREAS OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE:

  •     Heart applications
  •     Oncological applications
  •     orthopedic applications
  •     Genitourinary system applications
  •     Endocrinological applications

OUR SUGGESTIONS TO PATIENTS COMING TO THE SHOOT

If you are pregnant, likely to be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding, please inform us. Please be at our department at least 15 minutes before the appointment time you are told for the examination. Bring all the files, reports, films, etc. records you have about your illness with you. The drug to be given to you for the examination will be prepared by the nuclear medicine department. Bring what is requested by the secretary (water, chocolate, milk, etc., although it may vary according to the shooting) while making an appointment with you, and come hungry or full, as instructed to you. Since there is enough space for only patients in the waiting section of our department, the fact that people in need of care and children other than their families wait outside the department will make our work and therefore service much easier for you. Many examinations are performed in our center and the waiting time and form varies according to the examination of each patient. Do not leave our center without being told that you can leave after the examination. After your examination is over, your images will be analyzed with the help of a computer and a written report will be prepared by your doctor. Get an information form from the nuclear medicine secretariat and come to your appointment by following all the requirements completely.
